The Hungry Caterpillar Story for KIds
Once upon a time, on a lazy Sunday, there was a tiny egg on a leaf. Out came the Sun, and its warmth led to the egg hatching into a Caterpillar! The tiny caterpillar was very hungry. He moved around stealthily, thinking of what he might eat to satiate his hunger.
He began by eating 1 Apple on Monday. That should have been enough for him, but the Hungry Caterpillar was still, well, Hungry! When Tuesday arrived, the caterpillar thought he would eat some more, and ending up eating 2 Pears. Even after devouring them entirely, he was still hungry.
The caterpillar did not stop there. On Wednesday he ate 3 Plums and on Thursday 4 Strawberries, with the same result: he was still Hungry! Then he took it even further. The menu for Friday was 5 Oranges, with the same result: a Very Hungry Caterpillar! That’s when the Hungry Caterpillar decided to take things to the next level.
It was on Saturday, that the caterpillar consumed the following items: a piece of Chocolate Cake, an Ice-Cream Cone, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 1 Pickle, 1 slice of Salami, 1 piece of Cherry Pie, 1 Lollipop, 1 Cupcake, 1 Sausage and a whole slice of Watermelon! It was a grand feast indeed, but it only led to the caterpillar having a terrible tummy ache at night.
The next day arrived. It was a Sunday again, and the caterpillar decided to do something different for a change. He ate a small but nourishing Leaf, and Voila! His tummy ache had mysteriously vanished. What’s more, he was no longer a ‘small’ caterpillar – he had become a ‘big’ one!
That incident set the caterpillar off on a completely new journey. He spun a cocoon around himself, and lived in this ‘Home’ for more than 2 weeks. At the end of that period, nibbling a small hole in the cocoon, he crawled out.
Except, he wasn’t the modest Caterpillar he had been all along. Now, he was the resplendent Butterfly!
Summary of the Hungry Caterpillar Story with Lessons
The Hungry Caterpillar Short Story is a charming tale that introduces kids to the delightful little Caterpillar whose hunger never seems to cease. It follows the travails of the small caterpillar as it eats different foods on different days of the week. That is, until it becomes a large caterpillar and finally, a Butterfly.
Presenting a couple of lessons that can be gleaned by kids from The Hungry Caterpillar Story.
- It helps kids notice the ‘patterns’ of foods eaten (like 1 item on the first day, and 2 on the second), and even Days of the Week.
- The second is the ‘main’ lesson, which is the following: Understanding the Life Cycle of a Caterpillar, and its transformation into a Butterfly.
The Hungry Caterpillar Story for Kids: How Children can Apply it to their Lives
The first thing children observe in their mind’s eye when they listen to the Hungry Caterpillar Story, are its Eating Habits. While it starts out by eating healthy food, it eats far more than it should and eventually, falls into the trap of eating Junk Food. This only ends up giving the Caterpillar a tummy ache!
Perhaps the biggest takeaway for kids here, is the fact that the real ‘Growth’ of the caterpillar occurs when he eats something ‘Small’ and ‘Nutritious’. Looking at this,.children understand the value of eating not only Less, but food that is Wholesome!
