The Talkative Tortoise Story for Kids
Once upon a time, there lived a talkative tortoise who lived in a pond with two geese. On account of his talkative nature, he had befriended the two geese, who made it a point to come across to where he was every day, to visit their hard-shelled friend.
Now, while the animals and other creatures in the pond – including our tortoise friend and the geese – were happy for quite a while, things seemed to change when a drought arrived. This saw the migration of many of the animals and birds that would flock to the pond each day, with a view towards finding greener pastures.
That was about the time that the talkative tortoise and the geese, too, decided that it was best that they shift to a place where they could find a steady supply of drinking water. Ironically but sadly, it was not a ‘walk in the park’ for the tortoise, who could not fly like his feathered friends, and could scarcely move a few paces in a decent window of time.
That was when the geese came up with an ingenuous plan, that would only work on one condition: The tortoise mustn’t open his mouth!
The plan was pretty simple. All the tortoise had to do was hold onto a stick with his teeth. The two geese would hold it in their beaks at either end, and set off flying, thus carrying the tortoise with them. Needless to say, the plan would fail spectacularly if the tortoise opened his mouth. And there were good chances of that happening, too.
After all, there was a reason he was called ‘the talkative tortoise’!
The day finally arrived, and the tortoise seemed ready for the journey. His geese friends once again warned him of the perils of opening his mouth, but it looked like he had gotten the draft. And so, the geese took the ends of the stick in their respective mouths, while the tortoise held on to it in the middle with his teeth. And thus, they took off.
Over valleys and hills they flew, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. That is, until some people on the ground in a village they passed, noticed the curious sight unfolding over their heads. They laughed, thinking how ludicrous it was that such a thing might actually be happening. They went even further, and shouted out at the tortoise, who couldn’t take it any longer.
He opened his mouth to say something back at them, and hurled to his death!
The Moral of the Talkative Tortoise Story
The story of the talkative tortoise has an important moral message for children and adults alike:
‘It is prudent to listen to well-intentioned advice.’
Lessons that Children can learn from The Talkative Tortoise Story for Kids
This classic tale of the talkative tortoise, has plenty to teach our kids.
- Always keep an open mind to what others are saying
- One must learn when the ‘right’ time to speak is
Many of us hear what other people are telling us, but do we really ‘listen’? It is imperative to keep an open mind when people are advising us to do something. If it makes sense, it’s probably worth considering that bit of advice.
There is indeed nothing wrong with being talkative, just like the tortoise was. That being said, there is also a ‘time to talk, and a time to listen.’ If only the tortoise had learned to keep his mouth shut for that brief passage of time that he was in the air with his bird friends, he would have saved his life.
At EuroKids we believe that while children should be encouraged to talk freely, parents must place an even greater emphasis on getting them to ‘listen’ to what others are saying. If only the talkative tortoise had ‘truly’ listened to what his feathered friends had told him, he would have still been alive! Narrate to your child the Talkative Tortoise Story, which will help firmly ensconce in their minds the true power of ‘listening’.
