The Proud Rose Story for Kids
Once upon a time, in a beautiful garden, there lived a beautiful rose flower that was in full blossom. She was extremely proud of her looks, but had only one complaint: she grew alongside a dull, ugly cactus!
Every single day, the vain rose would hurl insults on the poor cactus. Despite all the other flowers in the garden telling her to stop insulting the cactus, she persisted.
Then one day, a pine tree that was also growing alongside the rose, told the vain flower that she wished she could be as beautiful as her. Hearing this, another tree told the pine tree that there was no need to be sad, as nobody in this world can have everything they want. The rose, on hearing this conversation, uttered:
“Why, but I’m the most beautiful flower in the world, and I certainly have everything I want.”
On hearing this, the majestic sunflower intervened and said to the rose,
“How can you say that? There are many beautiful flowers in this garden, and you are only ‘one’ of them.”
To this the rose replied that this wasn’t true, as whoever came to the garden stopped to admire only ‘her’ indisputable beauty. Not only that, the rose went on further and insulted the cactus, calling him ‘ugly’.
Needless to say, this stirred up a storm amongst the other trees, that all chastised the rose for passing such a mean comment. They told her that nobody got to decide with a sense of certainty, as to ‘what is beautiful’. The rose herself, for instance, was ‘full of thorns’!
Nevertheless, as the days passed, the rose continued to insult the poor cactus. The cactus, on the other hand, took the vile comments of the rose in his stride, He told her that he was confident that God made all creatures, himself included, with a ‘purpose’.
Spring passed and the weather turned unbearably hot for the rose. One day, she was surprised to see a bird with a long beak, poking into the cactus. Astounded, she asked the pine tree what the bird might be doing. The pine tree told her that the bird was tapping into the reservoir of ‘water’ inside the cactus. Even though the cactus was hurt by the incessant ‘poking’, he didn’t mind as he couldn’t bear to see the poor bird suffer.
The rose was utterly ashamed to ask the cactus for water, especially after the way she had treated him. In the end she relented, and the cactus happily acquiesced. Given the go-ahead, the sparrows happily filled their beaks with water, and watered the thirsty rose’s roots.
