The Enormous Turnip Story with Moral for KIds
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there lived in a village a farmer and his wife. One day, the farmer told his wife that he was going to plant turnip seeds. The idea, of course, was to harvest plenty of turnips, so they could have some good old turnip soup!
And so, the turnips grew in the farmer’s garden, just as the farmer had intended them to. However, there was but one anomaly. There was one turnip in the garden that kept growing, until it reached gigantic proportions. The farmer, shocked to see such a big turnip, tried his best to pull it out from the ground from its shoots, but in vain. He then asked his wife to come and help him, but the two of them together could not find the strength to pull out the giant turnip.
After a while they shouted out to their grandson, to come and help pull out the turnip. The poor lad held onto the farmer’s wife, who in turn held onto the farmer, as he tried with this renewed, consolidated effort to pull out the turnip.
Alas! The turnip still didn’t budge.
Then the little boy called out to their dog. The chain of ‘pulling’ was repeated again. This time, the dog held onto the grandson who held onto the farmer’s wife, who held onto the farmer.
‘1-2-3 and pull!’ The farmer shouted, but even with all the help behind him, the turnip would not move.
Then the dog called the cat, who came and held the dog, who held the grandson, who in turn held the farmer’s wife.Needless to say, the farmer’s wife held the farmer. Once again they tried with all their might to wrest the stubborn turnip from the ground, only to fail yet again.
Now the cat called the mouse, who held onto the cat, who held onto the dog. Of course, the dog was holding the grandson, who in turn held onto his grandmother, who was holding the farmer.
Yet again the farmer shouted ‘1-2-3… and pull’, and this time – wonder of wonders – the turnip suddenly found itself freed from the ground, and fell down with a loud thud!
The farmer, his wife, their grandson, and even the dog, cat and mouse, were amazed to see such a large turnip.
In the end, the farmer picked up the huge turnip – not without some difficulty of course – and hauled it into his house. There, the farmer’s wife prepared some delicious turnip soup, with the addition of some herbs and spices, for all who had helped pull the turnip from the ground!
