The Clever Monkey Story: A Monkey Story for Kids

Once upon a time, in a jungle far away, a few animals gathered around a Watering Hole. They found themselves there on account of a shrewd lion who had come to live in their jungle of late. He had been bullying the animals, doing all sorts of things ranging from playing ‘connect the dots’ with the giraffe’s spots, and even tying the poor elephant’s trunk in a knot!

Unbeknownst to the animals, there was a monkey sitting high up on a tree, listening patiently to their conversation. Finally he blurted out, ‘Why are you all scared of that lion? He has been working for me for the longest time!’

The animals stared at the monkey, disbelievingly. Then they broke into peals of laughter. The very thought of a lion working for a monkey, was downright ridiculous! In only a short while, the lion approached the animals.

‘Why are you laughing, you fools?’ He asked them.

The animals, taken aback, told them what the monkey said.

‘Where is that foolish monkey?’ The lion roared, clearly incensed. The animals pointed to the tree where the monkey had been only moments ago, but he was gone.

The lion went off in search of the monkey. A little while later he found him standing in the middle of the jungle path. He roared, ‘The animals told me that you said I worked for you. How dare you!’

‘That is not what I told them’, the monkey said. ‘I told them I’m afraid of you and that I have the desire to work for you!’

Then he added, ‘Come on, Lion Sir! Let’s go and tell those foolish animals the real story!’ The lion agreed, and started walking with the monkey monkey to the watering hole. Only a few moments in, the monkey grabbed the lion’s leg.

‘What on earth do you think you’re doing?’ The lion roared.

‘I stepped on a sharp rock and can’t walk. May I ride on your back?’

The lion pondered over this, before saying, ‘Only if you tell the animals you are scared of me.’

The monkey agreed. Only a few moments later the monkey cried out.

‘What is it now?’ Asked the impatient lion.

‘Your back is too lumpy. I think I need a saddle.’

The frustrated lion helped the monkey make a saddle of palm leaves. Then they were off again.

“This is much better, said the monkey.’

Only a few moments later, though, the monkey cried out again.

‘What is it this time?’ The lion exclaimed, clearly losing his patience.

‘There are too many flies around.’

The lion, angry now, handed over a leafy branch to the monkey.

‘Here. You can use this to swat the flies!’

Off they went again. A little while later, as they were approaching the watering hole, the monkey sat high up in his saddle and swatted the lion with the leafy branch, while yelling ‘Yeah!’

The lion, clearly taken aback, ran as fast as he could past the animals around the watering hole. As they passed them the monkey yelled out, ‘Come on you lazy lion, this is no time to rest!’

The animals had a hearty laugh. Only a few moments later, the monkey jumped off the lion’s back and into a tree.

It is believed that the laughs of the animals are still ringing in the lion’s ears, and he is still running away from them. As for the Clever Monkey, he is still laughing!
