The Camel and the Jackal Story for Kids

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there lived a camel and a jackal that were the best of friends. The jackal, however, was very sly and often ended up fooling the camel. One day he said to his camel comrade:

“Did you know, there is a field of sugarcane just across the river? If you carry me on your back, I will show you where it is, and we can have a delicious meal!”

The camel, ever-obliging, agreed to carry the jackal on his back, knowing well that his friend couldn’t swim. They went across the river, and true to the jackal’s promise, they soon entered the sugarcane field. In no time, the both of them had enjoyed eating the sugarcane to their heart’s content. This was the time the jackal began to howl. The camel, shocked, told his friend:

“Please don’t howl, my dear jackal friend. I haven’t finished eating, and what’s more, the owner of the field might just hear your howling, and come and find us here.”

However, the jackal, not one to care about what other people thought, replied:

“Oh, please! I have the habit of howling after a hearty meal.”

Thus speaking, he kept on howling. In only a short while, the camel’s fears came true. The owner of the sugarcane field arrived with a large stick. The jackal promptly hid in some bushes nearby, but the camel was too large to hide anywhere at all. He just remained there, frozen. In only a short while, the owner of the field had beaten the poor camel black and blue!

When the farm owner went away, the camel and the jackal proceeded on their journey home. As on the first journey, the camel carried the jackal on his back. In the midst of the river, he suddenly started rolling. The jackal, aghast, replied:

“What on earth do you think you’re doing? Don’t you know, I can’t swim?”

To this the camel replied:

“Oh, I always roll after I have a good meal.”

Thus speaking, he rolled yet again and this time, the cunning jackal fell into the deep river!

Lessons that Children can learn from The Camel and the Jackal Story

There are indeed some precious lessons that can be learned by all kids, from the Camel and the Jackal Story.

  1. Think before you act
  2. Children must be taught that every action they take has its accompanying consequences. They must think hard before they take any action that might hurt other people.

Example: The jackal must have been well aware that there might have been a situation where the farmer would arrive on hearing his howling. Even then, he deliberately persisted, only to see his camel friend suffer in the bargain.

Note: This also includes taking a good hard look at the way we ‘speak’ to other people. Kids must learn that we can cause a tremendous amount of pain to others, by the harsh words we speak.

  3. A bad person will never go unpunished
  4. The jackal might have believed that he could get away with just about anything he did, but look at what happened! In the end, it was the camel’s turn to have the last laugh, as the vile jackal was punished for the sin he had committed.

At EuroKids we believe strongly in the importance of doing ‘good’ unto others at all times. Narrate the story of The Camel and the Jackal to your children today, and help them realize the importance of taking the time to act, so they do not end up hurting anyone.
