The Boy And The Mango Seller

Before we proceed further into this narrative, let me tell you about a small incident that my grandmother used to narrate often. She loved telling us tales about Tenali Rama – he was always good for a laugh and taught us important life lessons. It happened one hot summer afternoon when a little boy was walking back home with a mango he had bought from the market. Suddenly, he was stopped by a mango seller, accusing him of stealing it. Scared and confused, the boy did not know what to do next until an old man appeared out of nowhere with twinkling eyes full of mischief and a comforting smile on his lips – yes, none other than our very own Tenali Rama himself, who sorted out things using his wits showing innocence boy’s hands making seller learn honesty even though being such minor event demonstrated how quick thinker justice seeker Tenali Raman was.

The Weight Lifter Tale

Once upon a time, in the grand court of King Krishnadevaraya, there came a wrestler from a distant land who had never lost a single match because he had unbeatable strength. This proud, arrogant person challenged every member present, including ministers, soldiers, guards, and anybody else sitting around lifting heavy loads. He said anyone succeeding would receive gold coins worth a chest, but those failing must serve under him for a year long.

Many mighty men tried their luck, but none could lift that weight. This made the wrestler even more proud, and he started ridiculing people vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya was deeply hurt by these insults towards his subjects, and summoned Tenali Rama – jester of the court and closest confidante.

“Tenali,” the king commanded, “you must not find a way to humble this wrestler and restore the honour of our kingdom.”

Tenali Rama took on the challenge with a sparkle in his eyes. He approached the wrestler and said, “I agree to your challenge, but I have one condition. Considering you are in our country as a visitor, it is only right that you respect our traditions. Before every strength competition, we perform an ancient rite in our land. You will have to follow our custom if you want me to lift the weight.”

Interested and anxious about what Tenali Rama had in mind, the wrestler consented. Then Tenali Rama told his assistants to bring a big heavy metal box and put it next to the wrestler’s weight. He explained, “In our tradition, the contender must first step into this metal box and close the lid for some time. It signifies humbleness and surrendering oneself before a great victory.”

The strong man stepped into the box without any hesitation, being confident of his power and wanting to prove his might. Tenali signalled for his aides to lock it up as soon as he was inside. The trapped wrestler began shouting, demanding release, But with an unruffled smile on his face, pointing at the king said, “Your Majesty by stepping into this box he has accepted defeat because Wrestler’s challenge was not getting trapped within heavy objects but rather lifting such.”

At that moment, the court burst out laughing while King Krishnadevaraya felt extremely satisfied with what Tenali Rama had done. The defeated athlete realising he had been outwitted, apologised humbly for his arrogance. They let him go, keeping their promise behind a chest full of gold coins, which he left as a sign showing respect towards state people
