Back to Grammar Basics: Decoding the Basic Parts of a Sentence

A sentence is defined as a collection of words that has a ‘subject’ and a ‘predicate’.

Note: The subject can either be a ‘noun’ or ‘pronoun’, that is responsible for the ‘action’. The predicate, on the other hand, refers to the ‘verb’ that is the very action that is performed by the subject in the sentence.

Examples of Subject and Predicate in Sentences:

  • The man kept laughing.
  • In this case ‘the man’ is the subject that performs the action, and is hence ‘the subject’.

  • Rohit is writing an email.
  • Here, ‘is writing’ is the action that is performed by the subject ‘Rohit, and is hence’ the predicate.’

These are only the basic rules of sentence writing, mind you. However, once they master them, children will be able to move on to the more complex nuances of sentence writing, far more easily.

  7. Stimulate their Creativity
  8. If there’s one thing that kids love most, it’s retreating to the world of their imaginations!

To do: You want to use the power of their imagination well, vis a vis constructing sentences. To do this, ask them some cool ‘open-ended questions’.

    Sentence Building Examples:

  11. Story Chains
  12. This one is a cool sentence building activity that is best played with a few children.

To do: Ask your child to begin a story with a sentence of their choice, Then their friend must add to that sentence, and then the next friend must do the same and so on, until the turn comes back to your child. This one’s a really cool exercise to show kids how several sentences, when grouped together, can form a  beautiful ‘narrative’.

    Sentence Building Examples:

    • Your child might say ‘Once upon a time there was an old house.’
    • The next child might add: ‘In that house there lived a cat.’
    • The third kid might add: ‘The cat was very naughty.’
