Grandma’s Bag of Stories: A Summary

If you have ever sat in front of your grandmother and listened to her narrate a mesmerizing tale or two, you will want to read the Full Story that is Grandma’s Bag of Stories by Sudha Murthy. Of course we cannot condense the entire book here, but we can certainly give you a whiff of the marvelous ‘essence’ of this delightful book, in the summary that follows.

The book starts off against the backdrop of Summer. A few children find themselves going on a holiday to the town of Shiggaon in Karnataka. The place where they will be staying is none other than the home of their grandparents!

As children are naturally inclined to do, the kids on holiday find themselves befriending the children next door, and playing for hours on end with them. So intense is the camaraderie between them, they find themselves engaging in all sorts of interesting things together. Things like taking a trip to the market, and even embarking on a picnic!

However, there is one thing the children like more than anything else. Namely, listening to the captivating tales narrated by none other than Granny herself! Now, it is interesting to note here that these stories come from a seemingly ‘Magical’ Box of Stories. It’s little wonder, because the stories in themselves have a ‘magical’ touch to them.

There are all kinds of stories that the endearing Granny has to tell. For instance, there is the tale about a Bear that gets really angry because he was cheated of eating a delicious Dessert! Then there is the story of a Gentleman who was simply too lazy to put out a Fire. That is, until it reached his Beard! Not forgetting to mention, the Chinese Queen who was responsible for the discovery of Silk, and the Princess who turned into an Onion!

All these tales are narrated by Granny to seven little children, over the course of some pretty long summer nights. What is truly impressive about Grandma’s Bag of Stories, is the fact that it is packed with tales that not only serve to ‘entertain’, but inculcate in the grandchildren some vital moral lessons! Needless to say, your little ones will take away those important life lessons, too, when they read this wonderful book!

If you are wondering what these ‘Moral Lessons’ might be, they are inextricably linked to the sound ‘Values’ we want our children to imbibe. Values like ‘Kindness’ and ‘Courage’. What is especially important here, is Sudha Murthy’s ability to engage children in fantastical new worlds. Worlds in which she introduces the readers to characters that are most ‘relatable’.

Apart from the wonderful stories themselves, there are also tales of the grandchildren on vacation. This only adds to the charm of the story, and one comes to love the adventures of the grandchildren as much as the Stories from Grandma’s Bag they listen to! In the end, Sudha Murthy does a most brilliant job of creating a Book of ‘Stories within a Story’!

In India, children are always stoked at the opportunity to go to Nani’s or Dadi’s home. In all probability, these affectionate grandmothers have only the most engrossing tales to tell their grandkids. At EuroKids we believe in the indisputable power of Storytelling. We encourage you to buy Sudha Murthy’s book, ‘Grandma’s Bag of Stories’, and read at least one story from it every night to your kids!
